The Wharf Academy is now housed in a magnificent, medieval church 3 minutes from Central Norwich.

St Martin’s On Oak has a fascinating history, taking its name from an Oak Tree that used to stand in the ground, which housed an image of the Virgin Mary. After suffering heavy bombing during the II World War, St Martin’s on Oak suffered the loss of its tower.. it was then transformed into a local “Parish Hall” during the 50′s with the Chancel at the back of the building remain a place of worship. Many original monuments remain, however the most elaborate are in store at the city’s museum.

After housing the city’s night shelter for many years, and then an artists studio (evidence of which can be seen by a brilliant piece of modern art imaginatively created on the wall in the Chancel) the church unfortunately became redundant for about 3 years. The Wharf decided to take on the building as a space to grow the Academy, starting out with the Main Hall being used again and with the addition of numerous sound proofed teaching studios which will be installed over the next few months. Alongside the Norwich Historic Churches Trust, a schedule of works has been devised to bring this church back to life and what better way to do it than to fill it with music and song.
